CENTANE- Amathole District Municipality (ADM) has handed over 10 water tanks to residents and essential community facilities in Rwantsana Village, Centane as an interim response to water-supply challenges in the area.
The handover was led by ADM Executive Mayor Cllr. Anele Ntsangani on Wednesday, 26 August 2026 under Mnquma Local Municipality.
According to ADM, eight tanks were allocated to communities in Ward 23, while Tutura Clinic and Mabobothi Senior Secondary School each received one tank.
Councillor Ntsangani said the intervention will support households and public facilities that have experienced prolonged challenges in accessing reliable water. During the handover, he announced that ADM would provide a further 10 tanks as part of its continued response.
“These tanks are a temporary measure while the projects are being implemented,” said Ntsangani.
The Municipality stated that the tanks will provide temporary relief while longer-term water infrastructure projects are being implemented, including three projects currently underway in the area among them the Nxaxo-Cebe project which is nearing completion.
Community representative Thambisile Nduku welcomed the intervention.
“Residents had struggled with unreliable water access for several years and we appreciate the relief provided by the municipality,” he said.
Following the community handover, Councillor Ntsangani visited Tutura Clinic and Mabobothi Senior Secondary School to formally hand over their tanks and engage nurses and educators about the challenges facing the two facilities.
Maintenance and inadequate sanitation were identified as key concerns.
In response, the Executive Mayor committed ADM to providing four toilets across the two facilities and recruiting Expanded Public Works Programme workers to assist with maintenance.
In addition the Municipality said residents were also encouraged to take collective responsibility for safeguarding the tanks and other public assets.
“We must protect municipal and community infrastructure from vandalism,” said Ntsangani.
He further called for united community action against gender-based violence and femicide, faction fighting and other social challenges affecting women, children and young people.
Mnquma Local Municipality Council Speaker Cllr. Monica Qaba thanked ADM for responding to the needs of the Centane community.
“Improved access to water brings dignity and relief to residents,” said Qaba.
ADM stated that the intervention forms part of its ongoing responsibility as the district Water Services Authority to provide immediate relief while implementing sustainable solutions to water-supply challenges across the district.
