61-Year-old entrepreneur still serving KuGompo’s favourite liver after two decades

KUGOMPO CITY- A 61-year-old entrepreneur Mr Mazwi Patrick Mavata has been successfully running a popular liver business in KuGompo City(formerly known as East London) for nearly two decades, serving generations of loyal customers.

Born in Ntabozuko(formerly known as Berlin) in Tshabho village, Mavata later relocated to Mdantsane where his entrepreneurial journey began in the 1980s.

Facing limited employment opportunities at the time, he started selling sweets on trains to earn a living.

Before dedicating himself fully to business, Mavata held several jobs. He worked at Leon Helferd between 1989 and 1991, and later at Sweet King in 1995.

In 2003, Mr Mavata established his liver business near the old Boxer building in KuGompo CBD, close to the Jumbo taxi rank.

With the support of his wife and children, he has managed to maintain the business and build a loyal customer base over the years.

“The business has experienced fluctuations however I have maintained continuity through the support of my family. My children played a crucial role in sustaining the business when I briefly pursued other employment opportunities for nearly three years in the 1990s,” Mavata said.

Mr Mavata believes the strategic location of his business has contributed greatly to its longevity. The nearby taxi rank brings a steady flow of customers, while the relatively affordable operating costs in earlier years helped the business grow.

Like many small businesses, Mavata’s venture also faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Increased competition from new vendors selling similar products in the same area also added pressure.

“Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we faced difficulties, including new competitors selling the same product nearby,” he explained.

Recently, the business received an unexpected boost after one of Mavata’s daughters shared a post about the stall on social media.

The post attracted new customers and encouraged former patrons to return, many surprised to find that the business is still operating and serving the same beloved liver recipe.

In addition the business has played a vital role in supporting Mavata’s family over the years. Looking ahead, he hopes to expand his entrepreneurial ventures.

“It has always been my dream to own shops and if the opportunity comes, I would pursue that in the future,” he said.

Despite his age, Mr Mavata continues to commute from Mdantsane to KuGompo City centre by train, taxi or private transport to run the business.

His dedication remains strong as he continues serving the community with his signature liver dishes.
