Quadriplegic activist recognized for empowerment work

DIMBAZA- In a heartwarming celebration of selflessness and dedication, Mdantsane Township will honor the remarkable contributions of Suria Vuyokazi Skepe towards youth empowerment.

The special occasion, scheduled to take place on 21st December 2024 at Zone 15 Community Hall, will also mark Suria’s silver jubilee.

Suria Skepe a quadriplegic activist from Mdantsane has dedicated her life to advocating for the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities. Despite facing numerous challenges, including lack of access to reasonable accommodation Suria remains determined to drive change.

Through her organization, Dimbaza Youth Network Suria has been offering life skills training to vulnerable girl children, helping them stay in school and build a brighter future. Her family home has also provided overnight shelter and emergency support to those in need.

Executive Director of Dimbaza Youth Network Thabisa Dyonana said, “Suria believes that strategic partnerships and advocacy are key to advancing the socio-economic interests of indigent persons with disabilities. She is calling on the government and its partners to develop actionable plans to invest in the skills of the future, ensuring that persons with disabilities contribute to sustainable socio-economic growth.”

Dimbaza Youth Network is set to launch a series of live-streamed roundtable discussions in 2025/2026, engaging decision-makers on issues such as inclusive growth, public open space planning and healthy neighborhoods.

Suria’s remarkable work and dedication to empowering others serve as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and equitable society.
