UIF employer seminar boosts business compliance in Eastern Cape

EAST LONDON– In a concerted effort to equip Black Management Forum (BMF) members with critical knowledge on labour laws and employer responsibilities, the Department of Employment and Labour(DEL) in partnership with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and the BMF Eastern Cape, hosted a comprehensive UIF Employer Seminar on Friday, 17 October 2025 in East London.

The seminar aimed to empower BMF-affiliated businesses by providing vital information on UIF processes, compliance with employment laws and addressing common workplace challenges, particularly in relation to UIF registration.

Key areas covered during the session included; UIF Compliance and Benefits- Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), Inspection and Enforcement Services (Basic Conditions of Employment Act – BCEA)- Public Employment Services and ESSA (Employment Services of South Africa) registration- UIF Online Systems and Employer Support.

Provincial UIF Director Morgan Ramatsetse emphasized the significance of the seminar in enhancing employer understanding and improving service delivery. “The UIF provides a safety net for the unemployed and supports your journey back to employment. We encourage active participation, knowledge sharing and collaboration to improve understanding of UIF and its role in society,” he said.

Attendees expressed gratitude for the practical knowledge shared. Middy Makhaphela, representing Pro Clean Services alongside colleague Thandolwethu Ntswayi, highlighted how the event helped them assess their company’s compliance. “We learned whether we are doing things right in terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. We gained a lot from the COIDA information it really empowered us,” Makhaphela said.

In addition BMF Eastern Cape Chairperson Bhekisisa Mthembu, praised the initiative noting the positive ripple effect such engagements have on the broader economy. “This engagement plays a crucial role in supporting businesses. The strength of our workforce is directly linked to the health of our economy. It’s our responsibility to take proactive steps in supporting and empowering the workforce,” he said.

The seminar demonstrated the DEL, UIF and BMF’s shared commitment to fostering compliant, knowledgeable and resilient businesses in the Eastern Cape.

As local enterprises continue to navigate evolving labour regulations, initiatives like this will remain vital in ensuring long-term sustainability and growth.
