KUGOMPO CITY- A major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking in the Eastern Cape has led to the arrest of a 47-year-old foreign national believed to be a key figure in a large-scale narcotics distribution network.
The arrest follows a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Counter Narcotics Unit, in partnership with Organized Crime and Crime Prevention units.
Authorities say the suspect is allegedly linked to the distribution of drugs across multiple provinces, with operations centred in Quigney, KuGompo City.

The operation unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday morning when Crime Prevention members intercepted a white Toyota Corolla near King Phalo Airport.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered narcotics in the possession of the occupants, prompting further investigation.

Police then proceeded to a flat at Kennaway Court in Quigney, identified as the suspect’s operational base. After gaining consent to search the premises, officers uncovered a significant quantity of drugs along with cash believed to be proceeds of illegal activities.
The total estimated street value of the seized drugs stands at approximately R19,311,000. The confiscated substances include mandrax tablets valued at R1,240,000, cocaine worth R18,000,000, as well as smaller quantities of rock (crack cocaine) and crystal meth (tik). In addition, authorities seized R77,340 in cash.

A 36-year-old female was also arrested during the operation. Both suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court soon, where they will face charges of possession and dealing in drugs.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, commended the officers involved, describing the operation as a clear example of effective intelligence-led policing.
“This successful operation demonstrates the strength of collaboration between our specialised units and our commitment to removing drugs from our communities,” said Ncata.

“We will continue to pursue those who threaten the safety and wellbeing of our citizens,” he added.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and further arrests have not been ruled out as authorities work to dismantle the broader network linked to the suspects.
