Second student death in one semester shakes NMU community

GQEBERHA– The Nelson Mandela University(NMU) community is in mourning following the sudden death of a third-year student from the Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences who was found unresponsive at Premier Student Accommodation (PSA) on 26 October 2025.

This marks the second student death reported at the university during the current semester, leaving many students and staff members reeling from grief and concern.

University officials have reached out to the student’s family to extend their deepest condolences and support during this difficult time. Students affected by the tragedy are encouraged to make use of Emthonjeni Student Wellness, which offers counselling and psychosocial services across all campuses.

Police have confirmed that a suspect is currently in custody and the cause of death will be officially determined following a post-mortem investigation.

The university expressed its sorrow in a statement.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him. May his soul rest in peace.”

The tragedy has deeply shaken the Nelson Mandela University community, serving as a painful reminder of the importance of solidarity, compassion and mutual support during times of loss.
