GQEBERHA – In a bold move to ignite growth for emerging transport businesses, the Coega Development Corporation partnered with the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (CBRTA) to launch a high-impact two-day summit focused on empowering micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the cross-border road transport sector.
The conference was held at the vibrant Coega Vulindlela Accommodation and Conference Centre in Gqeberha on 28 July 2025, the event brought together entrepreneurs, industry experts and government leaders all with one goal of unlocking new opportunities for small businesses in regional trade.
This event was hosted by CBRTA a state owned entity reporting to the Department of Transport, the summit was created to address challenges faced by transport operators, while also encouraging growth and regional trade. The CBRTA plays a key role in making cross-border movement smoother and ensuring that road-based trade supports long-term economic progress.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa, delivered a strong message on the value of freight logistics to the economy. He stressed that it is the duty of the state to provide support mechanisms that helps small businesses in this field expand and succeed.
In addition he delivered a powerful message on the future of small businesses in the transport sector, calling for a wider, more inclusive network of stakeholders. “Every major company began as a small idea, it is our duty to open the doors, offer support and help these small businesses grow into industry giants,” he said.
Furthermore Coega Board Chairperson, Dr. Luvuyo Bono celebrated the joint efforts, which have already delivered key initiatives like truck stop facilities, driver training and business support. “This is a proof that collaboration delivers results.”
Meanwhile CBRTA Board Chairperson, Advocate Sonwabile Mancotywa called the conference a vital space for operators to tackle challenges and stay ahead of industry changes.
To this end Communications and Stakeholder Relations Manager at the Coega Development Corporation, Andile April highlighted the importance of creating platforms that bring together key players in the transport ecosystem. “This conference is not just about dialogue, it’s about building bridges between small businesses, policymakers and the private sector to unlock long-term growth,” said April.
He added that Coega remains committed to supporting initiatives that boost enterprise development and regional trade integration.At its core, the partnership between Coega and CBRTA aims to strengthen the competitiveness of transport and logistics, promote road safety and upskill the workforce all contributing to South Africa’s broader economic development goals.
