KWABHACA- A disturbing image of an injured learner’s palm went viral on social media, prompting the Eastern Cape Department of Education(EC DoE) to take swift action against corporal punishment at Osborn Secondary School in KwaBhaca on 28th July 2025.
Reports suggests that the learner was allegedly assaulted by teachers for not paying a school trip.
According to investigations conducted by the department confirmed that, corporal punishment is still being administered at the school and the school principal has been suspended. However two teachers implicated in the incident are currently employed at the school.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education spokesperson Vuyiseka Mboxela said that, “We can confirm that indeed as the department we have suspended the Osborn Secondary School principal, reason for that is because of the corporal punishment that was meted against a learner.”
Mboxela reassured that the department is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all learners and assures the public that decisive action will be taken to address any wrongdoing in schools.
In addition all stakeholders are urged to cooperate with the investigation.
EC DoE takes allegations of corporal punishment seriously and is dedicated to holding accountable those responsible.
