KARIEGA – A group of visiting scholars from Jacksonville, Florida recently gained valuable insights into innovation and industry in Nelson Mandela Bay(NMB) during exclusive tours of two key development sites in Kariega on 2nd July 2025.
The scholars’ day began at the Volkswagen factory, one of Africa’s largest automotive plants in Kariega where they observed high-tech production processes and sustainable practices.
According to Nelsonn Mandela Bay Municipality, “This experience highlighted the region’s significant role in driving economic growth and job creation.The group then visited the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre, which featured interactive exhibits and hands-on demos showcasing Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics(STEM)fields such as robotics and renewable energy.”

Furthermore the experience not only inspired curiosity but also encouraged interest in pursuing careers in science and technology.
“This visit was part of the Jacksonville-Nelson Mandela Bay Sister City partnership, supported by South African Local Government Association(SALGA), Cooperative Governance(COGTA) and Government Communications and Information Systems(GCIS) in the Eastern Cape,” NMB statement added.
The partnership aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing between the two cities.
The scholars’ visit to Nelson Mandela Bay demonstrates the region’s commitment to innovation, economic growth, and development and highlights the importance of partnerships in driving progress.
