Lotto donated R10 Million to flood zones in the province

MTHATHA- The National Lotteries Commission(NCL) has pledged emergency financial and humanitarian support to flood-affected communities in the Eastern Cape, following the destructive floods of June 10th.

Areas severely impacted include Mthatha, Mnquma, Mbhashe, Great Kei and Amahlathi local municipalities where lives were lost and services like water, electricity and healthcare were disrupted.

According to NLC Chairperson Professor Barney Pityana and Commissioner Jodi Scholtz visited affected communities on Friday 27th June, to engage with traditional leaders and government stakeholders.

Professor Pityana emphasized that, “Emergency interventions are conducted following a rapid needs assessment and are implemented in partnership with qualified not for profit organisations.”

Furthermore, the commission has activated its Research-Based Funding Model to release funds without a formal application process

R10 million will be used to provide essentials like food parcels, clean water, school uniforms, sanitary pads, and healthcare, through partnerships with Non-Governmental Organisations(NGOs) like the Small Projects Foundation.

In addition NLC says it aims to restore dignity, bring relief and help rebuild lives across affected municipalities.
