FLAGSTAFF- A 21-year-old woman from Siphezini location in Flagstaff has turned her life around thanks to a ‘Skills Program‘ funded by the Department of Labour’s Unemployment Insurance Fund(UIF).
Nokwenela Phuthuza, who matriculated from Bukazi Senior Secondary School 2024, had planned to take a gap year but discovered a passion for Building and Civil Construction through the program. Initially drawn to the program for the monthly R2,000 stipend to cover personal expenses, Nokwenela found herself inspired by her relatives who work in Civil Engineering and now dreams of becoming a Civil Engineering expert.
“I was just looking for a way to get busy and earn some money, but this program has changed everything. I’m now inspired to pursue a career in Civil Construction,” Nokwenela said.
The six-month program, which includes 40 students divided into two groups focusing on Animal Production and Civil Construction, has not only benefited Nokwenela but also her peers.
“We were all just looking for a stipend, but this program has opened doors for us. Many of us are now applying to universities to further our studies,” she added.
Nokwenela is currently weighing her options on which higher education institution to enroll in for the 2026 academic year.
