GQEBERHA- A 16-month-old Luhlelunje Mdingi’s life was tragically cut short when a stray bullet struck him while he was being held by his 17-year-old aunt in Motherwell, Gqeberha on 3rd December 2024. According to Eastern Cape South African Police Service(SAPS) spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the incident occurred at approximately at about 17:00 in Sakhwatzha Street NU8, Motherwell.
The baby’s aunt was walking with him when a shot was fired and the child was hit in the arm. In addition, Luhlelunje’s mother Athuxolo Mdingi rushed her son to the Motherwell Health Centre but unfortunately he was pronounced dead just five minutes after arrival.
“Motherwell police responded to a murder complaint at Motherwell Health Centre, where they were informed that a 16-month-old child had died to a fatal gunshot wound,” Captain Rensburg stated.
Furthermore, a 31-year-old suspect was arrested on a charge of murder after reporting to the police station with his attorney on 4th December 2024.
The community is still reeling from the shock of this senseless tragedy and the family is left to pick up the pieces and mourn the loss of their beloved child.
