EAST LONDON- The Amathole District Municipality(ADM) has acquired a state-of-the-art 4×4 All Terrain Automatic Fire Truck, with an official handover ceremony that took place on 12th November 2024.
The official handover was held at the ADM Aspire Building and demonstration of the fire engine’s capabilities was also conducted, showcasing its advanced features and operational prowess.
ADM Executive Mayor Cllr. Anele Ntsangani has expressed his enthusiasm for the progress made by municipal officials, particularly as the district prepares to close for December.
“We are excited by the work done by our officials, especially during this critical moment as we are going to close for December,” Cllr.Ntsangani stated.
He also highlighted the district’s susceptibility to disasters especially fires during the summer season, often caused by negligence. “This area is prone to disaster especially fires during summer season sometimes it happens due to carelessness of our people, but in the past it costed lives, that is why we are responsive to it,” Mayor Ntsangani emphasized.
ADM Municipal Manager Dr Bhekisisa Mthembu hailed the arrival of new disaster response equipment, saying it will boost their ability to tackle district-wide emergencies.
“The equipment will enhance our response to disaster issues, giving us confidence to face future challenges and save lives,”said Dr Mthembu.
He also welcomed the allocated R6 million budget, calling it ‘the cherry on top’ to bolster their disaster mitigation efforts in the district.
In addition this state-of-the-art fire engine, valued at approximately R6.6 million, is set to boost fire fighting efforts in Mnquma and Mbhashe Local Municipalities.
Strategically located in areas in accessible to smaller vehicles, this powerful engine will provide critical emergency services to these ADM district communities.
ADM residents are urged to take precautions to prevent fires, such as properly disposing of waste, maintaining electrical equipment and having a fire evacuation plan in place.
By working together, the municipality and community can ensure a safer summer season.
