GQEBERHA- Security guards escaped with their lives after three gun wielding men allegedly robbed them off their belongings at Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha over the weekend. Eastern Cape Department of Health Director of Communications, Siyanda Manana said the incident took place just before 1am on Sunday, 16th March and he confirmed that no staff member had been injured during the brazen attack.
Manana said the three armed men allegedly came though the front main entrance of the institution that is opposite Shoprite, then they proceeded to rob the three female security guards who were seated inside the guard house.
Furthermore, “They pointed them with guns and took their personal phones and the company cell phone. No staff or patient was affected during the incident,” said Manana.
In addition Manana said that a similar attack had last occurred at the institution last year and the Department would provide the psychosocial support to the guards in order for them to deal with what happened. Manana condemned what he labelled as ‘attacks’ on all healthcare facilities, which have become regular occurrences in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. He said that the Department would work hand in glove with law enforcement authorities to bring the cuplrits responsible to book.
Manana emphasizedthat, “We implore everyone who might have seen or heard anything about the incident to please contact the police, so that the perpetrators can be brought to justice. Healthcare Facilities must be protected at all costs because such incidents trample on our people’s rights to healthcare and safety at our institutions,” he added.
