Neighbor sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for rape of a minor

STERKSPRUIT- The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape Division welcomes the sentence handed down by the Sterkspruit Regional Court against Anelang Eleloang Mohobo (39), who was convicted of rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The conviction stems from an incident that occurred on 12 July 2023 in Palmietfontein. The victim, who was 15 years old at the time (now 18), had gone next door with her younger brother to seek shelter while waiting for their mother.

In a statement issued by NPA on 30th March 2026 emphasizes that, “The accused, known to the children, offered them a place to sleep.”

“During the night, the accused sexually assaulted the victim while her younger brother slept beside them. He forcefully undressed and raped her, covering her mouth to prevent her from screaming. After the incident, he threatened to kill her should she report the matter,”NPA.

Furthmore, the victim later disclosed the incident on 22 July 2023 to a friend’s mother. When confronted, the accused assaulted the victim in front of the witness, causing serious injuries as confirmed by a J88 medical report.

During the trial, the accused pleaded not guilty to the rape charge, offering a bare denial. On the assault charge, he pleaded guilty but attempted to justify his actions by claiming provocation. However, under cross-examination, his version was inconsistent and contradictory, including claims that were not substantiated, ultimately weakening his defence.

Eastern Cape NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said, “Arguing for an appropriate sentence, State Prosecutor Anele Magibile emphasised the seriousness of the offences, highlighting the vulnerability of the victim, the abuse of trust by the accused, and the lasting psychological and physical harm suffered. The State further submitted that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence, and that a lengthy term of imprisonment was necessary to serve as both punishment and deterrence.”

In addition Mohobo was sentenced to 30 years’ direct imprisonment for rape and a further five years’ imprisonment for assault GBH, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.

The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, welcomed the sentence, stating that it reflects the justice system’s commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society and holding perpetrators of gender-based violence accountable.

The NPA commended the victim for her courage and resilience in coming forward to report the incident despite the threats made against her.

Her bravery played a critical role in ensuring that justice was served. The NPA further extended its appreciation to the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Mokheseng, for her thorough investigation and dedication to the case, which contributed significantly to the successful prosecution.

The NPA reiterates its commitment to fighting gender-based violence and femicide (GBV&F) and encourages victims to report such crimes, assuring them that they will be supported throughout the criminal justice process.
