Mthatha landmark destroyed as fire guts government hub, 4 department’s affected

MTHATHA- A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the historic Botha Sigcau Building in Mthatha, severely impacting a key government service hub in the region.

The blaze erupted shortly after 18h00 at the 11th-storey building situated at the corner of Owen and Leeds streets. Emergency services were swiftly dispatched to the scene as flames spread through the structure, causing extensive damage.

The Botha Sigcau Building, constructed in 1976 following plans approved in 1975, has for decades served as a central administrative hub, housing several provincial government departments that provide essential services to communities across the OR Tambo District.

By 21h09, multiple departments had been affected, including the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), Department of Transport, Department of Health and the Department of Social Development.

The King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the potential disruption to critical public services.

In a statement, the municipality said,“We express our profound concern and sadness regarding the fire incident at the Botha Sigcau Building. This unfortunate event represents a significant setback to service delivery and the loss of an important provincial asset that has long served our communities.”

The municipality further urged residents to remain calm and patient while contingency plans are being developed.

In addition, “Members of the public are advised to await further official communication from the affected departments regarding alternative service arrangements and recovery measures,”the statement added.

Emergency personnel remained on-site late into the evening working to contain the fire, while the cause of the blaze is expected to be investigated once the situation is fully under control.

Authorities have indicated that further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
