Taxi industry helps 30 graduates with training programs pp

EAST LONDON – The Eastern Cape Transport Tertiary Cooperative (ECTTC)is an organisation operating within the taxi industry and it’s focus is on transport sector development. On the 12 of January 2026 it has launched a training programme for 30 graduates from various districts across the province.

The programme which commenced in October 2025 under the auspices of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, has already witnessed the successful training of over 30 graduates, with more poised to follow suit.

Chief Executive Officer(CEO) at ECTTC Dr. Nokuthula Mbebe said that this pioneering initiative, a strategic partnership between ECTTC and Shell Garage, aims to revolutionise the transport sector and empower taxi operators with cutting-edge technology.

“Our goal is to modernise the taxi sector, enhance safety and provide value added services to commuters, ultimately contributing to the province’s economic growth and development”, she said.

The Wow platform offers a suite of benefits, including digital cash payments, GPS tracking real time camera monitoring, fuel rebates and modernized scholar transport systems. By leveraging this technology, taxi operators will be able to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and increase revenue.

OR Tambo student, Bandile Mhlontlo expressed his astonishment at the taxi industry’s adoption of cutting-edge technology, stating, “We were not expecting this program and we were amazed by the taxi industry’s strides, I have learned a great deal.”In addition ECTTC Training Officer, Onga Madikane elaborated on the Wow platform, explaining, “As a collection of integrated systems, we provide simple solutions, including mobile SIM cards, mobile applications and mobile WiFi. Our WiFi hotspots are strategically located in easily accessible areas, such as public transport terminals, taxi ranks, and bus stops, ensuring convenient connectivity for commuters.”

The ECTTC’s tireless efforts to promote the development of the transport sector have been acknowledged by stakeholders, including President Gaehler, who has expressed support for the initiative.

As the program gains momentum, ECTTC is poised to make a profound impact on the Eastern Cape’s transportation landscape.

Despite facing numerous challenges over the years, ECTTC has remained committed to its vision of transforming and developing the taxi industry.

Although the organisation previously struggled to secure government subsidies, it has continued to pursue initiatives aimed at improving the image and operations of the taxi industry, which has its roots in black owned enterprises.
