Luyanda Philiso walks 783km to spotlight South Africa’s content creators’ struggles

KHOWA– With nothing but a mobile phone, a clear vision and unwavering determination, digital content creator and community storyteller Luyanda Philiso has set off on a remarkable 783-kilometre walk from Alberton, Johannesburg to Khowa(formerly known as Khowa) using the journey to highlight the challenges confronting South African content creators.

The Johannersburg to Khowa walking campaign, which began on 01 January 2026 is expected to last approximately 14 days, culminating in Khowa with 10km run.

The journey is not only physical but deeply symbolic, reflecting the long and often unsupported road many creatives walk in their efforts to build sustainable careers.

Philiso who is also an event and talent promoter says the campaign is driven by a growing frustration shared by many in the creative sector. Through the walk, Philiso is appealing to corporate partners, property owners and brands to come on board with travel and accommodation sponsorship, including vehicle support, lodging and a stipend.

Such support would allow the team to continue producing daily podcasts, content updates and on-the-road productions throughout the journey.

In addition, the campaign aims to raise funds to upgrade studio equipment, enabling higher-quality production for community storytelling and event promotion beyond the walk. Philiso is urging supporters to help him reach ambitious milestones of 100 000 followers on TikTok and Facebook and 100 000 subscribers on YouTube.

“Even if you can’t sponsor financially, following, subscribing and sharing the journey is also a form of support,” he said.

Furthermore, as he makes his way step by step towards Khowa, Philiso hopes the campaign will spark broader conversations about supporting local creatives, recognising their impact and building sustainable pathways for digital storytelling in South Africa.

“This walk is for all of us, I’ll be updating every step of the way,” he said.

For those wishing to provide financial support towards the 783-kilometre walking campaign, contributions may be made to Philiso at Nedbank, account number 1332537251.
