EAST LONDON- Amatola Water has confirmed that all bulk water supplied to the Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) is safe for human consumption and fully compliant with national drinking water standards.
In a statement issued by Amatola Water on 08 January 2026, emphasised that the water utility said raw water sourced from Laing Dam on the Buffalo River is treated at the Laing Water Treatment Works in strict accordance with the South African National Standard for drinking water quality (SANS 241).

“The treated bulk water provided by Amatola Water meets all drinking water quality standards before it is supplied to Buffalo City Municipality, which is responsible for distribution to households and end-users,” Amatola Water.
Furthermore the assurance comes amid ongoing challenges related to raw water quality in parts of the Buffalo River catchment.
Amatola Water said that despite these challenges, its rigorous treatment processes and continuous scientific testing ensure that the water supplied remains safe, clean and reliable.

Amatola Water added that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of water treatment and continues to work with relevant authorities to address pollution at its source.
