Teen dies in drowning accident in Jeffreys Bay

JEFFREYS BAY- A 19-year-old boy died on 26th December 2024 after being swept out to sea by strong currents in Kabeljous River Mouth in Jeffreys Bay. The National Sea Rescue Institute(NSRI) and emergency services tried to save him but unfortunately they were too late.

According to the NSRI station commander Kristo Kritzinger the accident happened on 26 December 2024 when three teenagers were wading in the shallow water. They were caught by strong currents and pulled out to sea.

Kritzinger emphasized that, “We got a call about a drowning in progress and our team rushed to the scene, when they arrived they found that one of the teenagers had managed to swim back to shore. Another boy, aged 13, was rescued by a fisherman who threw him a fishing line to grab onto.”

Sadly a 19-year-old boy was found unresponsive in the water, “We searched for him and found him in the water. Our rescue swimmers tried to save him but he was already gone,” Kritzinger added.

Furthermore provincial South African Police Service(SAPS) are investigating the accident, the NSRI is warning people to be careful when swimming in the ocean, especially when there are strong currents.
