MDANTSANE- In a culinary scene dominated by international flavors, Nathi George is on a mission to showcase the rich and diverse heritage of South African cuisine. This 29 year old private chef from East London has taken the culinary world by storm with her authentic and mouth-watering traditional dishes.
Born and raised in Mdantsane Nu.3, Nathi’s passion for cooking was ignited at a young age she recalls spending hours in the kitchen with her mother learning the secrets of traditional South African cooking.
After completing her studies in hospitality and catering in False Bay College, Western Cape, she opened Sisters Eziko before deciding to take the leap and start her own business. In 2021, Chef George embarked on a new journey as a private chef offering best culinary experiences to discerning clients her cuisine is deeply rooted in South African tradition, with dishes inspired by her childhood and heritage.
In addition, Chef George is set to release her debut cook book, ‘Ukutya Kwasekhaya by Chef George,’ in the first week of December 2024. “I’m thrilled to share my love of cooking and my heritage with the world through this cook book. ‘Ukutya Kwasekhaya‘ is more than just a cook book, it’s a celebration of South African cuisine and culture,” she said.
“I want to share the beauty of South African cuisine with the world, our food is a reflection of our culture and history and I’m passionate about preserving and promoting it,” Nathi explains.
Chef George impressive culinary credentials make her the perfect candidate to share her knowledge and expertise with the world. A top-performing student in her field, Nathi achieved an impressive 5 distinctions in food and beverages and was ranked among the top 5 best students in her class.
“It’s not a 9-to-5 job where you get a monthly salary you need to equip yourself with the necessary skills and work hard to succeed, to get better at your job, you need to practice every day even if it’s just on your own,” Nathi emphasized.
She has revealed that she draws inspiration from fellow East London chef Siba Mtongana, like Nathi, Siba hails from Mdantsane.
“I’m inspired by Chef Siba Mtongana’s success and her passion for South African cuisine, she’s a true role model for young chefs from our community and I aspire to follow in her foot steps,” Nathi said.
When it comes to marketing her services she relies heavily on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp, “I use these platforms to showcase my work and connect with potential clients,” she explained.
Her marketing strategy goes beyond just online promotion, she believes in presenting herself professionally at all times which is why she’s always dressed in her chef’s uniform. “I want to show people that I’m capable and serious about my work,” she said.
As a private chef, Nathi had the opportunity to work with clients from diverse backgrounds, introducing them to the bold flavors and aromas of South African cuisine.
Her dedication to using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients ensures that every dish is not only authentic but also sustainable.
